SIOUX FALLS – Aberdeen Roncalli won three matches in super-tiebreakers and the Cavaliers sit in the middle of the pack in team points following the opening day of the State A Tennis Tournament on Monday.
“For a young team still growing and developing, we had a great day,” said Roncalli coach Jason Haskell. “Looking forward to seeing how (Tuesday) will play out.”
Roncalli scored 136 points and are in sixth place among the 11 teams in the tourney.
The Cavaliers will have the majority of their players still competing when action resumes today.
Gannon May moved into the semifinals at top flight singles after a hard-fought 6-2, 3-6, (10-5) super breaker victory in the quarterfinals. May will face former Aberdeen Central standout Mitchell Hofer of Sioux Falls Christian in the semis.
Roncalli also received super-tiebreaker wins from Linus Johnson at flight three singles, and Ben Goebel at flight four singles.
The Cavaliers did go 1-4 in tiebreakers and also lost a super on the day.
“For four of our players this is the first state tournament they have played in,” Haskell said. “Tournament pressure is different and I felt like we responded well to that pressure.”
Milbank scored 105 points on the day.
