
A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of April 13-19, 2025:
Last year on April 13, 2024: In their regular-season finale, the Aberdeen Wings claimed a North American Hockey League playoff spot with a 6-2 win over North Iowa. Jibber Kuhl had two goals for the winners while teammate Adam Dybal stopped 25 shots in net. The Wings made the Robertson Cup playoffs for the seventh season in a row, winning the national title in 2019.
10 years ago on April 14, 2015: The Northern State softball team’s bid to set flame to the school’s all-time single-season wins mark was interrupted Tuesday afternoon by actual flames. NSU won the first game of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader against the University of Mary in Bismarck to tie the Wolves school record of most wins (24) in a season. NSU was up 3-0 in the second game before a grass fire threatened the Mary campus, forced a schoolwide evacuation and the game to be called.
20 years ago on April 16, 2005: Sturgis and Kansas State graduate Megan Mahoney became the first South Dakotan drafted in the WNBA. Mahoney was the 34 th pick in the draft, drafted by the Connecticut Sun in the third round. Rapid City native and WNBA legend Becky Hammon entered the league as a free agent.
20 years ago bonus on April 18, 2005: Fred Tibbetts resigned as the Sioux Falls Roosevelt girls’ basketball coach. He retired after winning six state girls’ titles at Roosevelt and five state girls’ titles at Jefferson.
30 years ago on April 15, 1995: Philip native Lincoln McIlravy shared University of Iowa wrestling team MVP honors with two teammates.
40 years ago on April 13, 1985: Aberdeen Central graduate Burt Beattie is hitting .367 for the Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball team this season.
50 years ago on April 19, 1975: Garry Bentley of SDSU won the three-mile race at the prestigious 50th annual Kansas Relays.
