DICKINSON, N.D – Allison Woehl scored a power play goal early in overtime to give the Aberdeen Cougars a 2-1 girls’ hockey victory over the Dickinson Midgets on Saturday afternoon.
Interestingly enough, Woehl returned to her previous position on defense for the contest and the strategy ending up playing big dividends.
“We moved Allie Woehl back to D today, because of her powerful shot from the blue line,” said Cougars coach David Sandvig. “She fired in the game winner from the blue line.”
The Cougars scored first in the contest when Rachel Siefken scored barely two minutes in the game. Dickinson tied the score less than three minutes later before the two teams battled through a pair of scoreless periods to force the overtime.
Once there, Woehl found the back of the net at the 6:48 mark to secure the victory.
“It was back and forth the first two periods,” Sandvig said, “and we played great in the third to overcome a big shots on goal deficit.”
The Cougars, 7-2 overall and 6-0 in league play, return to league action next weekend, hosting the Rushmore Thunder in a rare doubleheader at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, and then once more on Sunday afternoon at the Odde Ice Center.
