RAPID CITY – Aberdeen Central ran into some tough competition Friday during the final day of the Class AA State Tennis Tournament. The Golden Eagles won just two matches on the day, but still managed to secure multiple state places.

“Like I said (Thursday), Day 2 matches are tough, and they definitely were for us today,” said Central coach John Vogel. “None of our semifinals were all that competitive.”

Central dropped all three of its semifinal matches in singles, before Chloe Ladner bounced back to take third place at flight four.

“Kudos to Chloe Ladner for her victory in the third place match at flight four,” Vogel said.

Reese Comstock and Sarah Knie both finished fourth in singles.

“Reese made a comeback in hers, but came up a little short,” Vogel said of her third place match.

Comstock and Ladner dropped an opening set tiebreaker in the championship match at flight two doubles, and then fell in the second set 6-3 to a team from Rapid City Stevens.

“Chloe and Reese had chances in their championship match,” Vogel said. “They got off to a slow start (trailing) 0-3, then came back only to lose in a tiebreaker. They were up early in the second (and were tied) 3-3, before Stevens got hot and finished them off.”

The flight three doubles team of Mady Holman and Estelle Riggs won a consolation match before finishing sixth.

Stevens won the team title. The Golden Eagles finished seventh.

“It was a rough day,” Vogel said, “but overall a good tournament.”

CHLOE LADNER: lost to Elly Clement, Mitchell, 6-3, 6-3; def. Angela Ge, Sioux Falls Lincoln, 10-7. THIRD PLACE.

Fifth Flight

SARAH KNIE: lost to Bella Nelson, Rapid City Stevens, 6-3, 6-1; lost to Lilly Statema, Sioux Falls Lincoln, 10-1. FOURTH PLACE.

Sixth Flight

ASHLEY ORTEGA: lost to Hope Gabel, Harrisburg, 10-2.
