A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of Aug. 25-31:

Last year on Aug. 26, 2023: Two-time Defending State B champion Warner went 4-0 to win the Parkston Volleyball Tournament and to give coach Kari Jung her 700th career win. The Monarchs’ coach is now 703-132 in 25 seasons with eight state titles and five state runner-up finishes.

10 years ago on Aug. 30, 2014: Top 25 college football teams had their way with SDSU (38-18 loss to 24th -ranked Missouri) and USD (55-13 loss to third-ranked Oregon).

20 years ago on Aug. 27, 2004: USD’s Derek Miles finished seventh in the pole vault at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. There were 39 athletes from 25 nations competing.

30 years ago on Aug. 25, 1994: The South Dakota Wildlife Federation has named Berdette Zastrow of Columbia as its conservationist of the year.

40 years ago on Aug. 31, 1984: Ricky Henderson of Oakland won the American League title for stolen bases with 66. Rapid City native Dave Collins of Toronto was second with 60.

50 years ago on Aug. 31, 1974: The NSU football team suffered a serious setback when former Conde standout Jerry McPartland broke his leg in football practice.
