WATERTOWN – The Aberdeen Roncalli tennis team got its day off to a rough start, but finished it much better on Monday.
The Cavaliers hit a deer on the way to their tennis triangular, but concluded the event with a strong showing in a dual victory.
“Sometimes you have days that help give you perspective. This was one of those days,” said Roncalli coach Jason Haskell said. “God was looking over our team today.”
The Cavaliers fell to Watertown 9-0 and defeated Sioux Falls Roosevelt 8-1.
“Watertown is always tough,” Coach Haskell said. “We battled well in doubles and then Watertown seemed to find their groove in singles.”
The Cavaliers continue to play without top player Cason Hellwig due to injury, but Will Haskell filled in admirably, losing 10-8 at top flight singles against Roosevelt.
“We ended the day strong against Roosevelt,” Coach Haskell said. “The only loss was at number one singles where my number seven is still filling in for Cason Hellwig. He fought hard and came back from a 2-5 deficit to take an 8-6 lead, but just couldn’t hang on. It felt good to see him play well at the fill-in spot.”
Roncalli’s duals against Huron and Milbank scheduled for today were postponed to Thursday because of the weather. The Cavaliers have their home opener on Friday taking on Brandon Valley and Aberdeen Central.
“I really like the way we are playing and the groove we are in,” Coach Haskell said.
