A look back at some of the sports happenings during the week of March 17-23:

Last year on March 18, 2023: The six Aberdeen Christian seniors (Andrew Brennan, Abe Holscher, Jackson Isakson, Ethan Russell, Malek Wieker and Kaden Clark) finished their high school basketball careers with an 85-15 record and four State B appearances (second, third and seventh plus the Covid year when the tourney was cancelled). Plus, the team had three 1,000-point plus career scorers in Russell (1,350 points), Wieker (1,299) and Jackson (1,255). The three surpassed the 1,000-point milestone within 16 days of each other as Isakson did it on Dec. 28, Russell on Jan. 7 and Wieker on Jan. 13.

10 years ago on March 21, 2014: Langford Area defeated White River 62-54 in five overtimes in the State B boys’ basketball consolation semifinals. Bo Fries and Drew Planteen of Langford played all 52 minutes as did White River’s Tavis Burbank and Justin Prue.

20 years ago on March 19, 2004: Logan Albers scored four points in the third overtime as Mobridge outlasted Elk Point-Jefferson 98-97 in the consolation semifinals of the State A boys’ basketball tourney.

30 years ago on March 20, 1994: Coach Chuck Welke and his Warner Monarchs won their second State B Boys’ Basketball Tournament in a row. Chuck Welke Jr. put up 30 points and 13 rebounds to defeat Emery 63-53 in the championship game.

40 years ago on March 23, 1984: Two basketball coaching legends will be featured on two Sioux Falls radio talk shows on March 26. Long-time NSU coach Bob Wachs will be featured on Sportstalk with Danny O (Olson) on KELO radio at 6 p.m. and former UCLA coach John Wooden will be featured on Talking Sports on KSOO radio at 6:30 p.m.

50 years ago on March 23, 1974: Northern basketball coach Bob Wachs has published a book about team play and his “Patterned Shuffle Attack.”
