MITCHELL – The Aberdeen Cougars scored first, but the Mitchell Marlins responded in a big way Friday night.
The Marlins produced three goals in each of the second and third periods on the way to a 6-4 boys’ hockey victory.
“It was a tough loss,” said Central coach Jeremey Backous. “It seemed like every time we’d score to close the gap and gain some momentum, we’d give up a goal on the next shift.”
After Karsten Jeschke gave the Cougars a lead with a goal in the closing minute of the opening period, Mitchell scored three straight goals in the second period. Aberdeen’s Aiden Posthumus got one of those back to end the period and the teams traded goals in the final period.
The Marlins extended the lead to 4-2, before Lance Siefken of Aberdeen close the deficit to one, only to have Mitchell score again. The Cougars’ Jack Podoll again closed the margin to one, before the hosts added one more goal for the final margin of difference.
“They have a couple of kids that can shoot the puck,” Backous said, “and we just didn’t do enough to limit their opportunities.”
Aberdeen, 14-9 on the season, plays at Yankton today.
