BISMARCK, N.D. – Aberdeen Central put nine wrestlers through to placing rounds after the opening day of the Bismarck Rotary Tournament, which began Friday.

The Golden Eagles were led by Rayden Zens (127 pounds) and Tate Huff (133), both of whom made the semifinals of their respective weight brackets. Zens secured a win in his match to advance to the finals. Huff will begin his day in the consolation rounds.

“It’s a tough tournament,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden. “It’s a quality tournament and a good barometer to see where you’re at, especially right now.”

Porter Lozenski (121), Ridley Waldo (139), Owen Ward (145), Elias Biegler (160), Ryker Meister (172), Cole Dunlavy (189) and Ayden Gisi (215) will also begin Saturday’s action in the wrestlebacks.

As a team, the Golden Eagles are sitting in fifth place out of 29 teams entered in the tournament. Central has 107 total points, just seven back of fourth place Dickinson. Rapid City Stevens holds the top spot in the standings with 151 points.

Going into the second day with nine wrestlers still vying for a place on the podium is a mixed bag for Bowden.

“We were hoping for more,” he admitted, “but we’ll see what we can do with them (Saturday).”
