Biegler wins title, Golden Eagles second at Lee Wolf tourney

In a final round that featured a couple of marquee rematches, Aberdeen Central grabbed one individual championship and just missed out on three others during the Lee Wolf Invitational wrestling tournament on Saturday.

Elias Biegler won the 165-pound championship to help lead the Golden Eagles to a runner-up finish in team points behind Canton at Golden Eagles Arena.

“He was kind of dominant through the tournament,” Central coach Donnie Bowden said of Biegler. “In the semifinals he was down and he had a big throw to beat a really good kid. Then in the finals he was really dominant. He just had a heckuva day.”

Biegler got a takedown and a three-point near fall to set the tone in the championship match.

“Getting off out of that failed shot, just arm around the back and I hip-tossed him,” Biegler explained of his takedown.

From there, Biegler rode out his opponent for the entire second period, which is no small accomplishment.

“My stamina has been getting a lot better,” Biegler said. “It’s becoming easier and easier the more you do it.”

That second-period effort took a bit of a toll heading into the final period, but Biegler was able to hold off a late rally for a 7-5 victory.

“Third period I was pretty gassed from the second,” Biegler said. “I was just trying to keep my lead and look for more points.”

Central lost three other championship matches, two by one point and another by two points.

“The effort’s there, we just have to start getting on the better side of some of those,” Bowden said. “Those are the ones that this time of the year, we’re going to have to start getting on the better side of if we want to get on the podium.”

One of those matches was another classic battle between Rayden Zens and Watertown’s Sloan Johnannsen at 126 pounds. The two have gone back and forth through the years with Zens handing Johannsen his only two varsity losses in the past four years.

Johannsen used an early takedown to grab an advantage en route to a 5-3 victory.

“I think it would have been a little bit more different of an outcome if I got the first take down,” Zens said, “but he set it up well, he took a nice shot, he got that.”

While the two have been rivals throughout high school, they are about to become teammates as both are headed to Northern State to wrestle next season.

“Honestly, I don’t think it will be as bad as everyone thinks,” Zens said. “Everyone kind of asks, are you and Sloan going to beat the crap out of each other? We actually have a good relationship off the mat.”

In another major rematch, Kellan Hurd of Miller-Highmore-Harrold defeated Haedon Jorgenson of Webster 7-4 at 138 pounds. It was their third match of the season with the duo splitting the first two for each other’s only losses of the season.

“We’re pretty good friends,” Hurd said. “It’s nice to wrestle each other. We’re always tough.”

On this occasion, Hurd took advantage of an early takedown for a lead he never lost on the way to the win.

“It’s one of the most important things in my opinion, getting that first takedown,” Hurd said. “It kind of controls the match from there.”

Hurd was happy with his Lee Wolf title after defeating a formidable foe.

“This is my first time ever winning this thing,” Hurd said, “so I guess it’s pretty cool for me.”

Ayson Rice of Canton received the Stan Opp Outstanding Wrestler award after he pinned Moses Gross of Huron in a battle of unbeaten wrestlers at 150 pounds.

In addition to Zens, Central also had runner-up finishes from Tate Huff (who won his 100th match earlier in the day) at 132, and Mason Schrempp at 157.

“It wasn’t a bad day at all,” Bowden said. “We got really good competition in, we scored points, everyone went out there and scored some points for the most part.”

The Eagles cap off the regular season by hosting Brookings on Thursday at Golden Eagles Arena.

“We’re getting there,” Bowden said. “We’re improving one week at a time and we’re going to be in a different place next week.”
