A week ago, the Aberdeen Central boys’ wrestling team couldn’t find the bonus points it was looking for. Tuesday night, the Golden Eagles weren’t searching, they were producing.
Central racked up nine pins on the way to a 63-14 Eastern South Dakota Conference dual victory over Huron at Golden Eagles Arena.
“That’s what we want do. We want to go out, we want to find bonus points,” said Central coach Donnie Bowden. “We want to separate ourselves, but that’s against everyone we wrestle. Not just tonight, every time we go out there, that’s what we expect to do.”
The tone was set for the evening when Esten Foss recorded a pin in the opening match at 106 pounds. Bowden said that match provided a spark for the team.
“It was good to see him get back to his winning ways a little bit, but just to see him have that fire,” Bowden said. “That was a big thing. I think that’s what gets the guys going. It’s just how we compete. It’s not always about winning, it’s about how you compete.”
Foss understands his role when he is the first Golden Eagle to step onto the mat.
“I know that’s what I have to do when I’m at 106,” Foss said. “I wanted to do better than I did last week, because it didn’t turn out how I wanted it to, so I knew I had to come out and put something good out there.”
Foss used an arm bar to gain an advantage against his opponent on the way to a pin.
“I really like doing that because I ride right side, it’s easier to hook for me, it’s easier to turn them,” Foss said. “If I can get it hooked up pretty deep, it always goes.”
One Central wrestler after another won by fall against the Tigers, but none more dramatically than Owen Ward 145 pounds. The freshman had a 2-0 lead before finding himself on his back, trying to fight off a pin.
“It’s not really something you see coming a whole lot,” Ward said, “but it happened and I found a way to get through it.”
Ward not only prevent a pin, he quickly reversed his fortunes and recorded a pin of his own.
“It was just a matter of hooking his leg and kind of rolling through,” Ward said.
Once Ward was able to gain the leverage he was looking for, he finished off the task with a pin late in the second period.
“I knew that if I rolled him through he would be on his back,” Ward said, “and then I would have the opportunity to pin him.”

Bowden said that Ward found a way, despite things looking a bit bleak.
“He found a way. It’s real easy to just lay there and bag it, but that’s what its about,” Bowden said. “That’s about finding a way even when you’re in adverse situations, when things aren’t right, you don’t feel good, you’ve got to go out and find a way to do it.”
Central also received pins from Paxton Ewing, Will Allen, Rayden Zens, Ridley Waldo, Elias Biegler, Noah Kramer, and Ayden Gisi.
The Golden Eagles take a Christmas break before returning to action in a dual at Mitchell on Dec. 28.
