The Aberdeen Cougars capped their regular season with a convincing 6-2 victory over the Watertown Lakers in girls’ hockey action Sunday afternoon at the Odde Ice Center.

The Cougars jumped on top early with three-first period goals and then added the last three goals of the contest to pull away for the victory.

Ema Rehder scored twice in the opening period for Aberdeen. Aiden Raap had the other goal as the Cougars led 3-1 after the first 17 minutes.

Watertown scored first in the second period to close to within 3-2 before Aberdeen scored three unanswered goals to take control.

Morgan Jones and Sydney Hofer found the back of the net in the second period, before Lauren Scheel added a third-period goal.

The Cougars outshot the Lakers 45-8 in the contest.

“We started pretty good with a little lull in the second, but were moving the puck around,” said Cougars coach Rob Weinmeister. “In the third we put a lot of shots on net and created more opportunities, we just were not able put the puck in the net.”

Kailyn Poppen had three assists for the Cougars. Jones also had an assist in addition to her goal.

The game wrapped up the regular season for the Cougars.

“I thought it was a good end to the league season finishing 14-4,” Weinmeister said. “We now have a couple of weeks to prepare for the State Tournament that will be held in our arena.”

The Cougars will go into the State Tournament as the third seed.

The tourney will take place Friday through Sunday, March 4-6 at the Odde Ice Center.
