HURON – A young Aberdeen Roncalli tennis team nearly captured its first win of the season before falling to Huron 5-4 on Tuesday. The Cavaliers were also blanked by Mitchell 9-0.
“I was proud of how well we competed today,” said Roncalli coach Jonah Dignan, “especially against Mitchell. When you get down in matches like we did, it’s easy to give up and I don’t feel like any of our girls gave up.”
The Cavaliers split their six singles matches against Huron, receiving wins from Sydney Bohle at flight two by a 10-8 score, Gianna Cihak at flight three 10-3, and Abby Andersen at flight five also 10-8. The top flight doubles squad of Keira Rivett and Bohle won 10-7.
“Gianna Cihak in particular had a great day in singles against Huron,” Dignan said. “She never let her foot off the gas.”
Roncalli will have two days off before getting right back to action on Friday and Saturday in Pierre. The Cavaliers will face Rapid City Christian and Rapid City Stevens on Friday, before playing Spearfish and Madison on Saturday.
“This weekend we have a couple girls that will be gone,” Dignan said. “We will try a couple different doubles pairings and a different lineup and see how it goes.”
