PIERRE – Aberdeen Central split two more tennis matches on Saturday to conclude a four-dual weekend with a pair of wins and a pair of losses. The Golden Eagles blanked Rapid City Central 9-0, before falling to Rapid City Christian 7-2.
Aberdeen’s closest match against the Cobblers came at first flight doubles, where Avery Tennant and Chloe Ladner secured a 10-5 victory.
“I will say their one dubs team is good,” said Central coach John Vogel. “They’re very aggressive and they volley well. … That was actually a very fun match to watch.”
The Golden Eagles then got off to a rough start against Christian, losing all three doubles matches.
“We started with dubs,” Vogel said. “It took me about five seconds to remember this from last year: they’re really good at doubles. … They’re very aggressive. It seemed like they punched us right in the face.”
Central responded well in singles, winning a pair of matches and just missing out on another.
Tennant won her match in a tiebreaker at first flight singles against a quality foe.
“That girl’s really good,” Vogel said of Christian’s top player. “She’s a hard hitter, and Avery pulled out a hard-fought tiebreak there.”
It was the final prep match in Pierre for Tennant, who has had many noteable matches there throughout her career.
“She’s had a lot, a lot of battles on that court, and she had one more today,” Vogel said. “That was an excellent match.”
Central’s other win came at fourth slight singles where Estelle Riggs doubled up her opponent 10-5.
“Estelle really figured out that girl and just started dominating her at the end,” Vogel said.
Mady Holman was up 9-5 and had a match point in her contest at fifth flight singles before eventually falling in a tiebreaker 7-5.
The Golden Eagles will have a busy stretch ahead with five matches this weekend in Sioux Falls, followed by four matches to conclude the month in Brookings.
“We have a very front-loaded schedule and it looks like it, and I’m OK with that,” Vogel said. “It gets the girls into shape and then we can work on stuff the second half of the season.”
