PIERRE – Aberdeen Roncalli fell in its final two duals of the week to start its tennis campaign. The Cavaliers lost to Madison 8-1 and also dropped a 6-3 decision to Spearfish on Saturday.

Abby Andersen had Roncalli’s lone win against Madison, securing a 10-7 victory at fifth flight singles.

Andersen was a part of two victories against Spearfish. The seventh-grader won her singles match by a score of 10-8, and also teamed with Natalie Sieh for a 10-7 victory at third flight doubles.

“Abby Andersen played really well this weekend,” said Roncalli coach Jonah Dignan. “She put together really quite good singles matches today, and came up huge in some points for doubles.”

Molleigh Hofer recorded Roncalli’s other victory on the day in an exciting match. The freshman edged her Spearfish foe 7-4 in a tiebreaker for a win at fourth flight singles.

While Sydney Bohle did not win a match on the day Dignan pointed out the play of the seventh-grader at second flight singles.

“Sydney Bohle also had a great day,” Dignan said. “She was down big against Spearfish, who is a very solid number two, and dug in and rattled off a number of games to keep the match alive.”

After a six-dual week to start the season, Roncalli is now off for two weeks until heading to Brookings on Saturday, Aug. 30.

“Overall, I think we come out of this weekend better than we went into it,” Dignan said, “and our younger girls got more experience which will be nice as we get further into the season.”
