SIOUX FALLS – It took a little extra effort, but the Aberdeen Smittys snapped a 12-game losing streak on Tuesday evening.

The Smittys finally subdued Sioux Falls West 8-6 in nine innings, before dropping a 4-0 decision in the second game in American Legion baseball action.

Aberdeen was rolling along in the opener and owned a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning when things got interesting. West scored three times in the bottom of the frame to jump in front by a run.

The Smittys got that run back in the seventh without a hit. An error, a sacrifice bunt, a ground out, and passed ball contributed to the run.

The contest eventually went to extra innings where Aberdeen scored three times in the eighth inning to take a 6-3 lead. A walk and a Grant Beyer double put two runners in scoring position. Levi Hoffman drove in one run with a single, before Joe Cogley drew a bases-loaded walk to produce another run, and Ridley Waldo was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in another.

However, West responded with three runs in the bottom half of the eighth to keep the game going.

The Smittys scored twice in the top of the ninth and this time there would be no response from West in the bottom half of the frame. Hoffman had another RBI single, and Joran Foss drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Hoffman and Foss both finished with two hits, while Waldo and Hoffman each drove in a pair.

West silenced the Smittys in the nightcap. Sioux Falls scored three times in the second inning for all the runs it needed.

Aberdeen had hits in both the sixth and seventh innings, but double plays ended both of those threats.

Waldo had two of Aberdeen’s four hits.

The Smittys return home Thursday to host the Renner Royals for two games at Fossum Field. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
