I recently caught up with Dennis Martinez, Star of the movie D.O.P.E., he is also a former 1977 World freestyle Champion and 1978 U.S. skateboard champion, Dennis was on the fast track to fame and fortune saying, “I was still in high school when I paid cash for a new car and paid for a full year on my own apartment.”  But with this fame and money came the lure of drugs, and by the age of 16, Dennis had a cocaine habit that would lead to 16-years on the needle.  From the life of a top pro athlete, Dennis took to the streets, using guns to perform armed robberies and to protect his drug stash.

Today, the highly successful Dennis Martinez has multiple projects underway, along with being a volunteer prison chaplain at Calipatria State Prison and a founder of Training Center, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in Spring Valley, San Diego, CA!

Wakeboarding! A great water-sport to start learning now!

March is a good time to start learning any water-sport, so that you will know more what you’re doing, and be able to enjoy it more fully when the warmer waters of summer arrive!  Developed from a combination of water skiing, snow boarding and surfing, wakeboarding is a surface watersport which involves riding a wakeboard over the surface of a body of water, usually towed behind a motorboat at 15-25 mph.  This of course depends on the water condition, board size, rider’s weight, type of tricks, and rider’s comfort speed.  Labeled by many as an Extreme sport, this video will give you a good idea of what wakeboarding is all about, the costs involved, and how to go about learning this sport!  So, get out and enjoy!

One of my favorite players, former Angels star Darin Erstad!

Darin talks about what’s important to him and also about the level of play in the High-A California league, where I caught up with him at the Diamond, home of the Lake Elsinore Storm, the Padres High-A affiliate. He was rehabbing and was very relaxed as we talked. This was cool for me as the .282 career hitter always impressed me as the ultimate team player! Darin played for the Angels from 1996-2006, winning a World Series ring before playing for the White Sox in 2007 and the Astros in ’08, 09. He was a two time All-Star and three time gold glove award winner! He is now Head Baseball coach at his Alma Mater, the University of Nebraska, where he won a National Championship while playing football for the Cornhuskers!

Tiger Woods talks Match Play!

Tiger was a happy man back in 2006, ruling supreme in the Golf World. It was also the last time the Accenture Match Play Championship was in San Diego, at the La Costa Resort & Country Club. You’ll see Tiger having fun with his old caddie and smiling on the course. I asked Tiger to give us his thoughts on Match Play. The tour’s only true match-play event, now in Arizona, features 64 players going head-to-head in 32 matches! Going against a single opponent and the course is perhaps the truest test of the game and the way the game was generally played through the first half of the 20th century!

One of my favorite local athletes, Monique Henderson offers a little advice for Sports!

Monique was recently inducted into the Breitbard Hall of Fame, within the San Diego Hall of Champions! She was a Morse High prep standout, who in 2000 became the first high school athlete to make the US Olympic track & field team since 1976! In 2005, while attending UCLA on scholorship, she became the 2005 NCAA outdoor Champion at 400m with a time of 50:10, a new NCAA record! Monique was an Olympic Gold medalist in 2004 Athens, and 2008 Beijing! However, her 2004 team was disqualified in 2010 after Crystal Cox, who ran in the preliminaries, admitted to doping. This is a clip from an interview before she left for Beijing. She offers some simple advice in this sport short!

This is what it’s like at a San Diego Hall of Champions Annual Salute to the Champions dinner!

This will give you an idea of what it’s like to attend one of these salute to the champion dinners.  You’ll see, hear, and recognize some of the athletes at this particular event.  Some of the interviews are about the Chargers, and what is said seems as though they are talking about this year’s Chargers’ team.  At this event, Louie Kelcher and Terrell Davis were inducted into the Breitbard Hall of Fame!  Each year the Hall inducts 2-4 locals who went on to Greatness in sports!  This year one of the inductees is Monique Henderson, an Olympic gold medalist in track and field.  Also this year two of the top professionals being recognized are Adrian Gonzalez and Shaun White!   In this video, right after Lorenzo Neal and Shawn Merriman, is Don Larson, who pitched a perfect game in the ’56 World Series for the Yankees, then you’ll see Hall of Champions founder, the late Bob Breitbard, who has his arms around a couple of kids, and without which, there would be no Hall of Champions!  Hope you enjoy.
